Merimbula is a classic New South Wales rivermouth setup that draws a steady stream of surfers hungry for solid, rippable waves. The break works its magic best on a southeast swell, though east and south pulses can also deliver, often producing a mix of peeling lefts with a steep, ripable wall and occasional hollow sections that throw out a quick barrel. Wave heights typically hover around the one-metre (three-foot) mark but can push much bigger when the energy lines up. Lower tides generally open up the best shape and more fun rides, though keep a sharp eye on the rip current as the water pulls out. A clean north wind is your ticket to peak conditions, ironing out the surface and making for smooth, crisp faces. While summer brings sizable crowds, the long paddle out and the break’s layout spread things out enough to keep it from feeling too claustrophobic. Merimbula is best suited for intermediate surfers looking to step up their game, thanks to the dynamic sandy bottom and longer wave lengths that reward positioning and timing. Be aware of boats navigating the rivermouth through the lineup, and while shark sightings in the area are not uncommon, staying alert is the main precaution. The challenge here is real, but for those up to it, Merimbula serves up some of the most rewarding waves on the Sapphire Coast.

Best Surf Season (April - August)

Merimbula Bar's most dependable surf window runs from April through August, when the Southern Ocean shifts into full voice. Frontal systems and low-pressure centers rolling across the Tasman Sea pump regular S, SSE and SSW groundswells toward this SSE-facing beach, while the sub-tropical ridge sitting to the north favours more NW/W and NNW offshore winds. Average wave periods climb from 8.1s in summer to a punchier 9.1-9.3s by late autumn and winter, and ideal wind readings jump from the low 20s to 36-44%. This is the season for serious sessions at the Bar.
