It demands a decent northeast swell, ideally pushing around 5 feet (1.5 meters), and the river must be running high—a scenario that doesn't occur daily. If it all clicks, the wave becomes a quick, sometimes barrel-happy affair, especially on a low tide when the water drains off the bar. Only experts need apply; the speed and power can punish the unprepared. The sweet spot for wind is a clean southwest breeze, keeping the face open and inviting. May through July is Pambula Rivermouth's golden window. The Southern Ocean fires deep cyclonic lows into the Tasman Sea, lifting the average period past 9 seconds and pushing the wind rose heavily into the SW/WSW quadrant. While the swell direction tilts more southerly, the NE-facing bar still catches the left-over NE component, and the near-constant offshore flow grooms the sandbar better than any other time of year. With ideal conditions running 38-40%, this is the season to book a trip around.
