January: Summer Seabreeze and the Dawn Patrol Window

The new year at Moruya Breakwall brings the classic east-coast Australian summer setup: a Tasman high parking itself over the western Tasman Sea and a persistent NE sea breeze kicking in through the afternoon. Swell averages just over 4ft (1.3m) with an 8.1s period - rideable but firmly in the average-punchy bracket. The east quadrant is full: ENE contributes 24 percent of the wave energy, E 21 percent, ESE 17 percent, and NE another 6 percent, so the breakwall's exposure to NE-ESE swell remains well fed. Most of that energy sits in the 2-3ft (0.5-1m) and 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range, meaning fun-sized, groveling-to-good surf rather than heavy groundswell. The problem is wind: ideal offshore conditions occur just 17 percent of the time, with NNE, NE, SSE and S winds all well represented. The NE/ENE/E/ESE onshore sector totals around 27 percent of the wind distribution. The play is early - a dawn westerly before the seabreeze rolls in, then an onshore bump through the middle of the day. With water temp at 20.9°C and air temps averaging 20.8°C, summer comfort is high even if wave quality is inconsistent.
