June: The Winter Engine Awakens

June is peak season in disguise. The ideal wind number hits 49 percent, the average period reaches 9.3s, and the average height remains a solid 4ft (1.2m). The synoptic pattern is all about strong cold fronts moving through the Tasman Sea and strong highs building behind them, pumping a persistent SW-WNW airstream into the New South Wales coast. The offshore quadrant - SW, WSW, W and WNW - makes up about 38 percent of the wind record, with SSW adding another 14 percent. Onshore NE-E flow is almost negligible at around 6 percent. The trade-off is swell direction: SSE becomes the dominant swell direction at 21 percent, with SE at 16 percent and S at 14 percent, while favorable E/ESE/ENE/NE energy still delivers 38 percent. For the east-facing breakwall, the more easterly angles are cleanest, but the winter wind means even the SE/SSE swell is usually groomed and surfable. Expect cooler days - air 11.1°C - and water temp down to 17.2°C. Rain increases to 3.03 mm/day, so keep an eye on frontal rainbands, but the surf quality can be outstanding.
