June: Full Winter Swell Engine

June sees the average swell height edge up to around 6ft (1.8m) with a long 9.6s period and ideal wind at 35%. The swell direction shifts toward the south: SSE 17%, true S 16%, SE 13%, with SSW and SW adding a combined 9%. While south-heavy swells are less perfectly aligned than pure SSE/SE, the strong presence of Southern Ocean lows and east coast lows ensures plenty of size and power. Most waves sit in the 3-6.5ft (1-2m) range, with a higher percentage of 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) sets than in the summer months. Winds are dominated by the westerly stream: W at 14.3%, WSW at 12.4%, SSW at 13.5%, WNW at 7.9%, NW at 6.4% and NNW at 11.2%. These offshores and cross-offshores can transform sometimes lumpy south swell into clean, bowling lines.
