October: Shoulder Season Potential

October is the definition of hit-and-miss. Ideal wind drops to 29%, the average period shortens to 8.7s, and average swell height settles at around 5-6ft (1.6m). The swell direction still favours S/SE: SSE 18%, S 13%, SE 13%, but ENE has grown to 12% and NE to 11%, giving the ocean a distinct late-spring flavour. Wave heights are again dominated by the 3-6.5ft (1-2m) range, with occasional bigger S/SSE sets. Winds are less favourable: the NE/NNE quadrant totals around 19%, S/SSE another 18%, and while NNW is still common at 14%, the strong morning offshores of winter are becoming less reliable. The positive is that E/ESE and SE swells frequently line up, and 29% ideal wind means roughly one in three days will have some form of clean offshore or light wind window.
