Best Surf Season (May - September)

The Southern Ocean storm track is in full swing during these months, and Winkipop sees its longest-period, most consistent southwest groundswells of the year. Average periods run between 12.6 and 13.0 seconds, while the wind statistics show offshore W/WNW/NW/NNW flow 52-55% of the time in the core winter months. That means the famous left-hander is groomed clean more often than not, and the combination of solid 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) SSW/SW groundswell and offshore winds makes this the prime window.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, October, November)

Shoulder-season surfing at Winkipop is a game of timing. Wave periods are still respectable at 11.5-12.5 seconds, and the southwest swell window remains dominant, but the wind machine is less consistent. March and November suffer from increased sea-breeze influence and lower ideal-wind percentages, while April and October offer more synoptic fronts and better chances of clean, lined-up surf between low-pressure systems.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer at Winkipop is fun but frustrating. The Southern Ocean storm belt retreats poleward, average swell periods slip to 11.0-11.2 seconds, and the daily sea breeze from the ESE/SE/SSE degrades conditions by midday. There are still waves from the SSW/SW window, often in the 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) range, but the onshore winds keep quality inconsistent. Early mornings before the seabreeze fills in are the clear play.
