Capao da Canoa seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - August)
The South Atlantic really wakes up during late autumn and winter, and Capao da Canoa sits right in the firing line. A succession of cold fronts and extratropical cyclones rolling out of Argentina and Uruguay aim long-period swell at this east-southeast-facing beach from the S, SSE, SE and E directions. May and June stand out as the crown jewels: average wave heights hover around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), periods stretch toward 10s, and the offshore W/NW wind quadrant is at its most frequent. That combination produces the most consistent, clean and powerful surf of the year, despite the colder water.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April is the gateway month, when the first serious groundswell pulses of autumn arrive and the offshore wind percentage jumps to 27 percent. September offers the largest average swell of the year around 6ft (1.8m), but the return of the NE trade wind makes conditions less reliable. Both months require a little more luck with wind direction, but when the timing is right the waves are well worth the wait.
Low Surf Season (October - March)
From mid-spring through summer, the South Atlantic High pumps a relentless NE/ENE trade wind over southern Brazil, and the swell drops back to a smaller, shorter-period, wind-affected mix. October to December still sees decent E/ESE groundswell, but the ideal wind score falls to 16-18 percent and onshore/cross-shore texture becomes the norm. That said, Capao da Canoa rarely goes flat. You just have to hunt for the early-morning windows, pre-frontal NW breezes and the late-summer transition days in February and March when the ocean starts to wake up again.
