Best Surf Season (May - August)

The South Atlantic winter kicks into gear from May through August and Praia da Vila sees its most consistent surf of the year. Extratropical lows marching from the Argentine Basin toward the Brazilian shelf generate repeated pulses of SSE, SE and S swell, pushing the average period up toward 9.6s and keeping wave heights in the fun-to-solid 1.3-1.4m (4-5ft) range. The wind also cooperates more often, with offshore N/NW flow behind cold fronts making for glassy morning faces. This is the season where the beach truly fires.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April is the beautiful transitional month: the first strong South Atlantic fronts arrive, the period jumps to 9.0s and ideal offshore wind is present 54% of the time. September is a different story - it can serve up the biggest average swells of the year (1.5m / 5ft), but the onshore wind component rises sharply, cutting the ideal-window percentage to 39%. Bigger, more powerful waves are often on offer, but you have to pick your windows carefully.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From spring through summer, the subtropical high strengthens and the local wind regime shifts to the NE/E quadrant. Praia da Vila becomes a smaller, trade-wind driven wave magnet, averaging 1.2-1.4m (4-5ft) with periods of 8.1-8.6s. These are rideable but often short-period and lumpy. Rainy periods and warmer water (23-25°C) accompany the low season. When a rare cold front punches far north, S/SE swell can still light the beach up, but the day-to-day consistency is modest.
