January: The Frozen Heart of the Storm Track

January has the North Atlantic in its full winter grip. The average swell height pushes 6ft (1.8m) with a dominant 7.3-second period, so this is mostly punchy, wind-driven surf rather than long-period groundswell. The swell rose is heavily weighted toward NNW (11.9%), NW (11.2%) and WNW (9.7%), with only about 15% coming from the NE through SE directions that really light up Ingonish's east-facing shores. What that means in practice is plenty of raw ocean energy bouncing around the cape, but truly aligned waves are less common than the size statistics suggest. Winds blow offshore from the W (16.8%) and WNW (17.1%) more than any other direction, and ideal SW-to-NW flow clocks in at 31%, giving occasional clean windows between Arctic fronts. When an Atlantic low drifts far enough south to send E/SE swell into the beach during one of those lighter WNW periods, you can score solid head-high-plus sets. Just bring every piece of rubber you own: air temps average -5.5°C, water is 1.1°C, and precipitation runs around 3 mm/day, usually as snow. It is cold, raw, occasionally epic, and definitely not for the faint of heart.
