October: The North Atlantic Roars Back

October is when Ingonish starts to feel alive again. The average swell height jumps to 4.5ft (1.4m) and the first powerful autumn lows sweep across the Northwest Atlantic, delivering a mix of local windswell and clean groundswell. The swell rose is again weighted toward NNW (11.3%), NW (9.1%) and WNW (8.0%), but the E/SE quadrant still contributes enough, around 15% combined, that the east-facing breaks see plenty of real surf. Offshore winds remain frequent: WNW totals 12.5%, W 11.6%, and NW 11.1%, with ideal SW-to-NW conditions at 39%. Air temps cool to 8.9°C and water is a still-satisfying 12.5°C, making a thick spring suit the call. October also brings a noticeable increase in precipitation, close to 3.7 mm/day, as the storm track strengthens. This month marks the true beginning of the high season: the days may be shorter and the weather more changeable, but the reward is meaty, head-high-plus swell and the first real chance to score memorable fall sessions before winter's deep freeze.
