Right Point

Tucked roughly ten miles south of Osbourne Head, Right Point is a classic, mile-long right-hand point break defined by a rocky, cobblestone seabed—a stark departure from the sandier stretches nearby. When the ocean pulses with size, three distinct sections link into a ride that stretches longer than California’s storied Rincon, making it a pilgrimage-worthy wave when the stars align. This point holds its own in swell from 1 to 6 feet, favoring southern angles out of the south and southeast. The ideal wind veers from west-southwest through northwest, while mid tide offers the most consistent shape. A mostly right-breaking wave, it’s best suited for intermediate shortboarders looking to carve across long, open faces. Access is straightforward, keeping the lineup approachable, though popularity breeds crowds and a notoriously territorial local vibe—newcomers should come prepared for some pushback. Winter water chills quickly, so a solid wetsuit is non-negotiable on cold days. Right Point is storm-dependent, firing best during the autumn and winter months, with prime windows arriving courtesy of late-summer-to-fall tropical cyclones and frontal systems that stretch into spring.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm track locks in from October through March and Right Point transforms into a winter wave magnet. Average surf heights climb from 4.6ft (1.4m) in October to a peak of 5.6ft (1.7m) in December, January and February, while average periods sit in the punchy 8.2-8.7s zone. The offshore wind quadrant - WSW, W, WNW and NW - is most dominant during these months, flowing straight off the land into the ESE-facing beach and grooming the lines. It can be brutally cold, with water temperatures dropping to 0.7-0.8°C in late winter, but when an E/ESE/SE swell lines up under a northwest wind, this Canadian point still holds some of the best, heaviest waves on the North American side of the Atlantic.
