Right Point seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm track locks in from October through March and Right Point transforms into a winter wave magnet. Average surf heights climb from 4.6ft (1.4m) in October to a peak of 5.6ft (1.7m) in December, January and February, while average periods sit in the punchy 8.2-8.7s zone. The offshore wind quadrant - WSW, W, WNW and NW - is most dominant during these months, flowing straight off the land into the ESE-facing beach and grooming the lines. It can be brutally cold, with water temperatures dropping to 0.7-0.8°C in late winter, but when an E/ESE/SE swell lines up under a northwest wind, this Canadian point still holds some of the best, heaviest waves on the North American side of the Atlantic.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)

The shoulder months are a study in trade-offs. April still averages 4.6ft (1.4m) and 8.4s, May drops to 3.9ft (1.2m) and 7.7s, while September bounces back to 3.9ft (1.2m) and 8.5s. The optimal E/ESE/SE swell window is actually well represented - especially in April and May - but it tends to be lower in period, wind-affected and mixed with a much larger volume of S/SSW/SSE energy. Offshore winds become less reliable, and onshore E/SE winds increase. Still, these months offer the best chance to find clean, rippable waves without fighting arctic air, especially in September when water temperature remains a pleasant 15.5°C.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the slow season at Right Point. Average swell heights dwindle to 3.3-3.6ft (1.0-1.1m) and average periods shorten to 7.2-7.7s, producing mostly weak, short-period windswell. The directional data is even more discouraging: S, SSW and SSE swells combine for the overwhelming majority of energy, while the useful E/ESE/SE window shrinks to as little as 8% in July. Winds are dominated by SW/SSW breezes rather than true offshore W/NW flow. Yes, the air is warm (16-18°C) and water warms to 15.3°C by August, but surf-wise it is a waiting game - save your energy for September and beyond.
