June: Winter Storm Track Roars

June is the heart of the austral winter and the month when Punta de Lobos' big-wave reputation is truly forged. The mid-latitude cyclones are now operating at full tilt across the Southeast Pacific, and the swell rose reflects a much more westerly, more powerful spectrum. WSW energy drops below 50 percent for the first time, while W jumps to 14 percent, WNW to 4 percent, and NW to over 1 percent. This expanded westerly window is exactly what the NNW-facing beach wants to see: long-period swells arriving with less refraction and more top-to-bottom force.

The average wave height sits at 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) on a 12.5s period, with nearly one-fifth of all waves running in the 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) category and a few XL outliers above 8ft (2.5m). It is the biggest, heaviest surf of the year in terms of raw frequency. Wind is more of a mixed bag: ideal conditions hold at 61 percent, with the offshore S-SSW-SW sector still combining for 34 percent between storms, but NNE-N-NNW onshore flows also peak, occasionally reaching 20-30km/h as fronts push through. Cold and wet - 10.5°C (51°F) air and a 12.9°C (55°F) ocean with 3.92 mm/day of rain - this is not fair-weather territory. But for experienced crews chasing heavy, long-period winter bowls, June is as good as it gets.
