Best Surf Season (December - March)

Playa Hermosa faces southwest onto Costa Rica's central Pacific, making it a rare spot that lines up beautifully with long-period Southern Hemisphere groundswell. The heart of the dry season delivers the cleanest and most consistent surf of the year. With the subtropical high parked over the Caribbean, N, NNE, NE and ENE flow spills through the Costa Rican mountain gaps and blows offshore across the southwest-facing beach. Wave heights average 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) but the energy is not the story - the texture is. Long, 12-14s SSW groundswell hits the sand in clean, rippable lines, and ideal wind blows up to 36 percent of the time in February. March adds a bit more size while keeping that dry-season structure. If you want quality-over-quantity surf on a warm-water beach break, this is the window.

Fair Surf Season (April and November)

These shoulder months are a tug-of-war between increasing South Pacific swell and a fading offshore wind signal. April still sees a highly dominant SSW swell direction - nearly 98 percent of the energy comes from the optimal SSW window - but the trade winds begin to ease and SE winds creep in. November represents the reverse transition, with swell size starting to taper but the wet-season onshore flow still affecting the beach. Expect fun 4ft (1.2m) waves with long periods, but with more variation in surface quality. Dawn patrols are far more reliable than afternoon sessions as sea breezes and tropical showers tend to build.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

This is the green season, and it is a classic tale of size versus quality at Playa Hermosa. The Southern Hemisphere storm track becomes very active, pushing average wave heights up to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods of 13-14s. The direction remains almost perfectly aligned - SSW and SW dominate the swell window. However, the wind turns against the surface: ideal offshore wind drops to just 18-23 percent, while onshore S, SSW, SW and WSW flow becomes more frequent. Heavy tropical rainfall, often 8-10mm/day, adds another layer of mess. Even in this season, there are moments - especially after a passing cold front or when a strong storm system pushes the wind around to the NW - when Playa Hermosa turns raw and firing. But for the average surfer, May through October is about picking windows rather than chasing a consistent clean wave.
