Best Surf Season (June - August)

From June through August, the southern hemisphere winter energizes storm tracks in the South Pacific and sends consistent, long-period SSW and SW groundswell across the equator to Central America. Combined with a return of offshore NE/ENE trade winds, this is the sweet spot of the calendar at Playa Junquillal. Average wave heights climb to 1.5m (5ft), periods hold in the powerful 13-14s range, and ideal wind conditions reach 62-79% of the time. July stands out with a 79% ideal-wind score, giving this west-southwest-facing beach the cleanest, most consistently groomed surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March - May and September - November)

The shoulder seasons offer good but less complete conditions. Spring sees directionally excellent SSW/SW swell build while winds remain mostly offshore, yet wave heights hover around 1.3-1.4m (4-4.6ft) until May. Autumn reverses the trend: September and October produce some of the biggest, most powerful swells, but heavy tropical rainfall and more onshore SSW/SW/W wind drop the ideal-wind percentage to 49-55%. November cleans right back up as the trades return, though the size fades into a more playful, rippable range.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

December through February is the low season in relative terms, not a flat season. The NE trade wind machine blows hardest, leaving the line-up glassy and groomed for much of the day. However, the average swell period drops to 11.5-12.3s and the wave direction becomes more mixed, with secondary NW/NNW and E/NE energy diluting the ideal SSW-SW window. Surfers can still find clean, waist-to-shoulder-high walls on the best southwest pulses, but this is the least powerful and least consistent part of the year.
