January at Playa Junquillal is a study in offshore trade-wind consistency. Northeast and east-northeast winds dominate the wind rose, with NE around 47% and ENE close to 40%, blowing straight offshore across the west-southwest-facing beach. Ideal wind conditions clock in at 61% of the month, so the surface is often clean and groomed, though the 10-30kph trade flow can add a bit of texture. Average swell height sits at 1.3m (4ft) with a 11.5s period, putting the typical waves in the rippable 3-5ft range and at the lower edge of powerful long-period energy.

Swell direction is more mixed than in summer. SSW and SW swells account for roughly 30% of observations, while a secondary WNW/NW/NNW window adds another 24%. That means Junquillal sees a blend of Southern Hemisphere pulses and North Pacific winter energy, and not every set is fully aligned with the optimal SSW-SW-WSW-W window. The best sessions happen when a long-period SSW/SW groundswell combines with the morning offshore breeze before the trades crank. Dry-season weather, with air temperatures around 27.8°C, water temperature near 27.9°C and only 0.23mm of rain per day, makes this an easy month to sit in the line-up even if the swell is not firing on all cylinders.
