Best Surf Season (December - April)

Roca Loca's most reliable surf window is the dry-season stretch from December through April. Average swell heights sit between 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), but periods run a long 12.3 to 14.0 seconds. That combination produces more push than the numbers suggest. The dominant SSW groundswell is aimed slightly south of the break's ideal SW-WNW window, yet it wraps nicely along the west-southwest-facing coast. The North Pacific subtropical high keeps the rain away, with precipitation averaging under 3mm/day in most of these months, and offshore winds out of the NE through ESE quadrant light up the face around 30-33 percent of the time. With lighter winds and clean surfaces, December through April is the go-to season for quality sessions.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, the Southern Hemisphere storm track fires up and the average swell size climbs to 4-4.5ft (1.3-1.4m) with periods holding at 13.2-14.1 seconds. This is the most powerful surf of the year, with a growing percentage of waves in the 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) range. The trade-off is the rainy season: precipitation jumps to 7.6-7.9mm/day, the Intertropical Convergence Zone brings afternoon thunderstorms, and the wind shifts more to the south and west. Offshore windows still occur 29-34 percent of the time, making a dawn patrol on a solid SSW swell very rewarding. May and June are especially good because the period peaks around 14 seconds.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

September and October are the fickle months at Roca Loca. The average size remains 4-4.5ft (1.2-1.4m), but the rainy season peaks with 8.7-9.4mm/day and ideal offshore wind drops to 24-28 percent. Tropical cyclones in the Eastern Pacific can occasionally send heavy SW or WSW swell into the coast, but those same systems often ruin the surface with onshore wind and storm chop. November marks the change back toward the dry season, with ideal wind up to 35 percent and rainfall easing to 6.4mm/day, so it acts as a bridge to the cleaner surf months. This is not a flat season; it is an inconsistent, storm-influenced one where patience and a flexible schedule are key.
