Roca Loca is a rugged, reef-fringed right-hander that lives up to its name—a localized, powerful slab charging off a cluster of exposed rocks. This wave demands respect and experience, calling for a solid southwest to west swell to turn it on. When the ocean aligns, expect a hollow, fast-moving wall that rewards commitment and punishes hesitation. The takeoff zone is tight, with the shallow reef lurking just beneath, so this is strictly expert territory. Paddling out requires threading a tiny, hard-to-spot keyhole in the rocks, adding to the challenge. Swells start to work around 3 feet (1 meter) and really shine when the west component is dominant. While a left-hander exists to the north, it’s fickle and only comes alive when the swell has enough size and weight. The ideal window comes with low to mid tide, which keeps the reef covered just enough for a clean, critical drop. Northeast winds offer the cleanest conditions, grooming the face and keeping the lineup from turning into a washing machine. Expect crowds when the stars align—this spot is a magnet for those who can handle its raw power and risks. For the skilled and daring, Roca Loca delivers some of the most rewarding waves in the area, but it never lets you forget what’s underneath.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - April)

Roca Loca's most reliable surf window is the dry-season stretch from December through April. Average swell heights sit between 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), but periods run a long 12.3 to 14.0 seconds. That combination produces more push than the numbers suggest. The dominant SSW groundswell is aimed slightly south of the break's ideal SW-WNW window, yet it wraps nicely along the west-southwest-facing coast. The North Pacific subtropical high keeps the rain away, with precipitation averaging under 3mm/day in most of these months, and offshore winds out of the NE through ESE quadrant light up the face around 30-33 percent of the time. With lighter winds and clean surfaces, December through April is the go-to season for quality sessions.
