Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - February)

Playa Bahoruco is a classic Caribbean trade-wind setup: an east-southeast-facing beach that lives and dies by the northeastern Caribbean trades. The best window of the year is December through February, when the North Atlantic storm track is most active and the trade-wind fetch is strongest. Average swell heights nudge up to 1.0-1.1m (3.3-3.6ft) with periods of 6.6-6.8s - a punchy, steep, rideable windswell - and the chance of a cold front swinging winds offshore to W/NW is at its annual maximum. Occasional 1.5-2m (4.9-6.6ft) ESE events show up too. The NAO plays a key role here: a positive phase tends to strengthen the Azores High and the trade winds, while a negative phase allows cold fronts to drop farther south and set up those rare offshore windows. Still, ideal offshore wind only blows 9-14% of the time, so patience is required to pick off the clean days.
