La Bocana

At the southern edge of El Tunco’s sleepy beach town lies La Bocana, El Salvador’s premier rivermouth left—a rare gem in a coastline dominated by right points. This sand-and-stone joint draws life from SSW and SW swells, earning its reputation as a swell magnet that often holds rideable energy when neighboring breaks go flat. But when it turns on, the local lineup can hum with intensity; respect is your ticket in. This left demands some heft to reveal its full character, lighting up best from 3 to 7 feet (1–2.1 meters). Mid to high tides set the stage, while a crisp northeast wind polishes the faces. Expect long, open lefts that unfold with steep drops and the occasional barrel, plus shorter, walled-up rights for variety—a playground for shortboards and fish. The river mouth is fickle, shifting sand and stones after heavy rains, reshaping the wave’s personality. The left in front of the river delivers critical takeoffs and hollow sections, but watch the shallow rocks on the right; this is expert territory. Getting there is easy: a half-hour bus ride from La Libertad costs less than a buck. Crowds can stack up when conditions are firing, so timing matters. Consistency peaks from late fall through winter, fueled by seasonal swells. Keep an eye on rainfall—it can transform the break overnight, shifting peaks and hazards with every storm.

Best Surf Season (November - February)

Winter in El Salvador is a surfer's reward. As high pressure settles over the Gulf of Mexico, cold fronts spill through the Chivela Pass and fire the famous Tehuano winds out of the NNE - blowing directly offshore at La Bocana and grooming the lineup to a glassy, rippable state. The Southern Hemisphere continues to send consistent SSW groundswell, averaging 3-4ft (1.0-1.2m) with 12-13s periods, and the ideal-wind clock runs at 65-70%. With air temps in the mid-20s, water at 28-29°C and almost no rain, this is the most consistent window for clean, fun surf.
