Capbreton delivers some of the most ferocious, grinding barrels in France—a high-voltage beach break where raw Atlantic power meets shifting sand. The notorious Bunkers section is the heavy end of the spectrum: steep, late drops into fast-closing tubes that detonate just feet from the beach. Eroded concrete blockhaus from WWII-era defenses now litter the inshore zone, acting as makeshift groins that help sculpt dynamic, ever-changing banks. Move south toward the sprawling car park and camper-van hub, and the intensity tames a notch—though crowds still flock for the reliable, punchy peaks. For a quieter session, a longer stroll down the sand uncovers more isolated setups, where the same swell pulses with fewer helmets in the lineup.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

As autumn deepens and the North Atlantic begins to spin up one low-pressure system after another, Capbreton transforms into a genuine European sandbar machine. The dominant swell window never leaves the WSW-to-NW quadrant, and from October through March the average wave height sits between 4ft and 6ft (1.2m and 1.8m) with periods mostly in the 11-13s range. These are powerful, long-period groundswells generated by intense extratropical cyclones moving across the North Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay. Combined with an increasing number of days of offshore-to-light easterly flow, the result is consistent, hollow, well-sequenced peaks on the sandbanks. This is the time to watch the charts, because when a deep low stalls near the Azores and a high builds to the north, Capbreton can serve up waves that are as good as anywhere in France.
