February: Cold, Gritty and Full of North Sea Power

February carries the same cold, gray energy as January but with a slight drop in average wave size to 1.1m (3.6ft) and period to 5.6s. The swell sources are almost perfectly balanced across the western quadrant: WNW at 14.3%, W at 14.2%, WSW at 14.0%, and NW adding 9.1%. This is classic North Sea windswell mix, and while there is less 2m+ (6.5ft+) energy than in January, there are still plenty of head-high-plus sets when a low pressure system parks itself west of Denmark.

The wind distribution again favours SW-WSW onshore flow, with SW at 9.8% and WSW at 9.9%. But the easterly offshore block is slightly more visible than in January, with ENE-E-ESE-SE combining for roughly 22% of observations. The average period of 5.6s means the waves will be short, punchy and sectiony, lacking the depth of a true 10s+ groundswell.

The reward for braving 2.8°C water and 2.1°C air is occasional groomed, playful sandbar peaks on a northwest swell. Ideal surf wind is only 3%, but if a continental high pressure ridge can hold off the Atlantic fronts, the clean windows are more than worth the freezing dawn patrol.
