The offshore ENE-SE quadrant is only around 17%, and the number of truly ideal surf-wind hours drops to just 2%, the lowest of any month. You can still find small, playful waves on a fading NW swell if an evening sea breeze dies, but the North Sea often looks like a choppy washing machine.
On the bright side, it is prime beach season. Air temperatures average 17.3°C, water warmth peaks at 18.1°C, and there is plenty of daylight. Beginners can enjoy the 1-2ft (0.3-0.6m) rollers; experienced surfers may choose to sleep in and save energy for autumn.
