Tucked away between the rivermouths of West Java, Cimaja is a raw and rugged reef break that delivers when the southwest swell lights up the Indian Ocean. Its rocky shelf, jutting into the lineup, amplifies the energy of passing swells, producing punchy, bowly rights that have a reputation for drawing Jakarta’s weekend warriors. Expect a saturated lineup on prime days, but with strategic timing and a keen eye on the tide clock, you can still find your share of clean, rippable walls. The magic happens with a healthy southwest swell, wrapping in from the south and west to break over an uneven reef. Wave heights typically hover between 3 to 5 feet, offering a challenging but rewarding ride for intermediate surfers. The dominant right-hander favors regular-footers, though lefts can pop up on the fringes. Best in north winds, the wave shape holds together across low, mid, and high tides, but it’s the low-tide barrels that steal the show—hollow and fast, with a shallow finish that demands commitment. Crowds are the price of admission here, especially on weekends and peak swell windows. Plan your sessions to dodge the peak hours, and aim for the outgoing tide, when the wave lines up best and the current lets you sit in the pocket with fewer hassles. Best Surf Season (December - March)

The northwest monsoon is the key to unlocking Cimaja's cleanest conditions. During these months, the wind flow settles into the north quadrant, creating the offshore breeze this south-facing beach needs to keep its walls crisp. Long-period groundswell from the Southern Indian Ocean still makes its presence felt, with average wave periods hovering around 12.5-13.1s and average heights near 1.4m (4-5ft). January and February are especially consistent, with ideal wind a strong 72-77% of the time and a swell mix dominated by SSW and S/SW energy. This is when Cimaja runs at its best: clean, rippable and lined up.
