Best Surf Season (December - March)
Green Bowls is a south-facing setup on the Indonesian archipelago, and it comes alive when the northwest monsoon takes charge. From December through March, the wind shifts into the offshore quadrant, with N, NNE, NW and NNW flows blowing clean across the surface while steady Southern Ocean groundswell pulses in from the S, SSW and SW. Average wave heights sit in the 1.6-1.8m (5-6ft) range with periods between 12.4 and 13.3s, which means powerful, organized lines with plenty of shape. The jetstream and low-pressure systems in the Southern Ocean keep the swell window active, and the wet-season cloud cover often leaves the winds lighter and more variable. If you can handle a passing tropical shower, this is the most reliable window for good, rippable Green Bowls.
Fair Surf Season (April & November)
April and November represent the transition between the northwest and southeast monsoons. The wind confidence drops fast and ideal surf wind occurs only 22% in April and 19% in November. Swell sizes remain respectable at 1.6-1.7m (5-6ft) and periods stay long at 13.2-13.8s, but the prevailing flow becomes dominated by ESE/SE winds, which put onshore and cross-onshore texture on the face. Early mornings, sheltered corners and occasional land breeze windows can still produce good sessions, especially when a strong high-pressure ridge sits over Australia and aligns the surface flow with the coast. It is a gamble, but one worth keeping an eye on.
Low Surf Season (May - October)
The southeast monsoon dominates from May through October. Trade winds from the ESE and SE blow straight into the bay, pushing bumpy, sectiony conditions onto the beach. Ideal wind drops to between 1% and 6%, while the swell actually peaks at 2.0-2.2m (6-7ft) with 14s+ periods from SSW and S. This is the classic Indo irony: the biggest, most powerful groundswells of the year show up, but the local wind regime rarely allows Green Bowls to hold form. Only brief breaks in the trades or a sudden NW burst can turn the surface glassy. For the average surfer, this is the least consistent quality surf season.
