The optimal swell direction is southwest, with size from 2 to 6 feet packing a serious punch. A northwest wind and mid-tide produce the cleanest, most workable waves. Crowds tend to gather early, when the wave is at its best, so pick your windows wisely. Green Ball favors intermediate surfers who can handle tricky currents and a shallow, unforgiving reef. Goofy-footers should think twice before attempting the left, as the rip and coral make it especially hazardous. If the lineup feels too intense, nearby breaks offer a more forgiving alternative after you’ve sampled Green Ball’s raw power.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

Green Bowls is a south-facing setup on the Indonesian archipelago, and it comes alive when the northwest monsoon takes charge. From December through March, the wind shifts into the offshore quadrant, with N, NNE, NW and NNW flows blowing clean across the surface while steady Southern Ocean groundswell pulses in from the S, SSW and SW. Average wave heights sit in the 1.6-1.8m (5-6ft) range with periods between 12.4 and 13.3s, which means powerful, organized lines with plenty of shape. The jetstream and low-pressure systems in the Southern Ocean keep the swell window active, and the wet-season cloud cover often leaves the winds lighter and more variable. If you can handle a passing tropical shower, this is the most reliable window for good, rippable Green Bowls.
