Best Surf Season (December - February)
Nusa Dua comes alive during the northwest monsoon. While the swell doesn't reach the octane of the Southern Hemisphere winter, the trade-off is offshore reliability: ideal wind conditions push up around 60% in December, January and February. Mean wave heights sit at a manageable 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with powerful 12-13s periods, and the dominant SSW/SW swell lines line up cleanly on Nusa Dua's SE-facing reefs. Water temperature hovers near 29°C and air temps stay in the high 20s, with tropical showers keeping humidity up but winds offshore. This is the money window.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & October - November)
The transition months of March, April, October and November are a mixed bag. The swell direction pivots more toward SSW - over 80% in October and November - and the period grows to 13-14s, producing longer, more powerful waves. Yet ideal wind reliability drops to between 11% and 48%, as the trades and monsoon wrestle for control. Early mornings and late afternoons can produce clean windows, but the ocean is often restless and bumpy. For the patient surfer, these shoulder months can still deliver, especially before the SE trades fully lock in.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
From May through September, the southeast monsoon establishes a firm grip. The Southern Ocean cranks out sustained groundswell - averages climb to 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) at 14+ seconds - but the easterly quadrant wind that rides with it is onshore/cross-shore for Nusa Dua. Ideal wind percentages crash to 0-3% in June-August, turning a potentially epic swell into a choppy, lumpy battle. Occasional gaps in the trade wind and protected corners can still offer sanctuary, but as a whole this is the low season for quality.
