Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic is fully awake from October through March, and Doolin Point sits right in the firing line. Average swell heights climb to 7-8ft (2.1-2.5m) in the heart of winter, with periods of 11.6-12.7s. Storm tracks driven by the Icelandic Low and a positive NAO push powerful W and WSW groundswell into the Clare coast. The catch: prevailing SW and W winds often accompany these systems, so the wind is only favourable 13-17% of the time. When a ridge of high pressure builds to the north and east and winds turn offshore from the E/ENE/NE quadrant, the Point becomes a serious, grinding, long-period beast.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Transition months bring a balance between solid swell and cleaner winds. April still serves up 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) at 10.8s with 22% offshore wind, while May trades size for clean, rippable conditions at 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) with 21% ideal wind. September marks the reawakening of the North Atlantic with 5ft (1.5m) swell and 10.2s periods as lows begin to deepen again. These months are your best bet for fun waves without the winter storm chaos.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer lull is real at Doolin. The Azores High migrates north, pushing storm tracks away, and average swell drops to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) with periods of 8.7-9.1s - more mush than power. Persistent W and SW winds are often onshore, and only 14-18% of the time qualifies as ideal. Unless a late-season hurricane remnant or an anomalous deep low breaks the pattern, these are the months to save your energy for somewhere else.
