Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic is fully awake from October through March, and Doolin Point sits right in the firing line. Average swell heights climb to 7-8ft (2.1-2.5m) in the heart of winter, with periods of 11.6-12.7s. Storm tracks driven by the Icelandic Low and a positive NAO push powerful W and WSW groundswell into the Clare coast. The catch: prevailing SW and W winds often accompany these systems, so the wind is only favourable 13-17% of the time. When a ridge of high pressure builds to the north and east and winds turn offshore from the E/ENE/NE quadrant, the Point becomes a serious, grinding, long-period beast.
