Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm machine switches on in October and doesn't switch off until spring. From October through March, Carrownisky sees average swells of 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m) with periods in the powerful 10-14s range. The west-facing beach is wide open to the dominant W/SW groundswell, and when winds turn offshore from the NE/ENE/E/ESE - whether from a Scandinavian high or a cold easterly snap - the sandbars produce clean, hollow surf. The catch is that the very storms generating the swell often drag SW/W winds across the coast, leaving the beach onshore and stormy. That is the classic winter trade-off at Carrownisky: epic groundswell or clean conditions, and only occasionally both at once. NAO-positive winters tend to produce more westerly energy and oversized surf, while NAO-negative blocking patterns open up more offshore wind windows.
