Easkey Right

Perched on Ireland's wild west coast, Easkey Right is a storied right-hand reef break that commands attention. While its reputation for world-class tubes is well-earned, the reality is often more forgiving—a long, rippable wall that rewards patience and timing. When conditions align—a clean west swell and low tide—the reef transforms into a hollow, racing line that can spit you into the channel. But don't expect perfection every visit; more often than not, you'll find a manageable, drawn-out wall that's ideal for intermediate surfers looking to stretch their legs. The wave itself is a multi-section reef affair, with shape and quality shifting dramatically with tide and swell direction. It handles a wide range of sizes, from chest-high 4-foot days to towering 15-foot-plus monsters. The magic happens with a southwest wind and low tide, grooming the face into a smooth, rippable canvas. The bottom is sharp, uneven reef—respect it, as the rock garden is unforgiving. The paddle out is short, but if you snag a long ride, expect to hoof it back out. On a good swell, you'll find everything from head-high to well overhead, with the occasional freight train. Access couldn't be easier: park right in front of the break. No bins, so pack out all trash. On prime days, expect a lively lineup—the spot's easy access and consistent quality draw a crowd. The vibe is generally mellow, but tension can simmer, especially as localism flares at neighboring peaks. Watch for shifting reef and rocks, particularly after big swells. For safe, fun surfing, keep it under 6 feet—anything bigger and the reef becomes unforgiving.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

As autumn deepens, the North Atlantic shifts back into gear. The Azores High retreats south, the Icelandic Low re-energizes, and a parade of extratropical lows starts firing along the northwest edge of Europe. The NAO is the master switch: positive phases tend to keep the storm track active and wet, while negative phases can block the flow and deliver more cold, clean north and northwest swells to Irish latitudes. Easkey's north-facing arena is perfectly positioned for the long-period W, WNW and NW groundswells these systems generate, and the best waves come when the swell angle carries enough north in it. Average surf size climbs from 6-7ft (2.0m) in October to 9ft (2.7m) by January, with periods in the powerful 10-14 second bracket. Offshore winds from the south and southwest become more frequent as pressure gradients tighten, and winter water temperatures in the 9-10°C range keep the crowd levels honest. This is the heart of the season: powerful, consistent and, on the right day, world-class.
