Bogliasco seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - February)

The depth of winter is when Bogliasco wakes up. The Mediterranean may not have the Atlantic's open-ocean fetch, but Gulf of Genoa low-pressure systems more than make up for it, firing swells from the S, SSW and SW straight into this SSW-facing beach. Average surf heights peak at 3ft (0.9m) in December and January, while the offshore wind window from N, NNE, NNW and NW opens 39-47% of the time. This is the classic Ligurian combo: a fresh pulse of Libeccio swell followed by a clearing Tramontana offshore wind. A negative NAO phase often tilts the odds even further in your favor, shunting more storm energy toward the western Mediterranean. It's not Hawaiian scale, but for this stretch of coast it is the most consistent, cleanest surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder seasons offer solid one-off days but with more variables. March still carries winter energy with an average around 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m), though ideal wind drops to 31% as thermal sea breezes strengthen. April fades further as SE/SSE swell becomes more common and the wind switches onshore more often. September is the first autumnal spark, and by October ideal wind climbs back to 31% while S/SSW/SW swells start pushing into the 5-6ft (1.5-2m) range on bigger days. If you time these months right, you can find clean, punchy waves - but the window is narrower and the forecast needs to be watched closely.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the doldrums. Average swell height bottoms out at 1.5-2ft (0.4-0.6m) from May through August, and average wave periods hover around 4.4-4.9s, which is more chop than actual surf. The sea-breeze regime dominates: SSE, SE and S winds blow most afternoons, while ideal offshore winds show up only 10-16% of the time. The good news: water temperatures are the warmest of the year, peaking at 24.6°C in August. Expect micro to small, groveling waves, with the rare exception when a strong mistral pulse or a rogue summer storm sends something rideable.
