Seccheto seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
The Tyrrhenian Sea shakes off its summer slumber as autumn deepens, and Seccheto - Elba's south-facing beach - finally receives consistent pulses of southerly swell. Average wave heights peak at 1.0m (3ft) in December, and the average period stretches to 5.2s. It's not Hawaii, but for this corner of the Med, those are prime numbers. Low-pressure systems that spin up over the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas send SSE, S and SSW swell directly into the beach, while NNW and NNE winds provide clean, offshore texture on around 10% of days. Cold fronts and the early winter jet stream activity combine to create the most powerful and rideable waves of the year.
Fair Surf Season (October & March)
These transition months serve up the highest percentage of south-family swell - October sees SSE directions reach nearly 21% of all wave energy. However, the average height drops to 0.7m and periods linger around 4.8-5.0s, so you'll be hunting for the peaks. The trade-off is lighter winds and warmer air, making it a great time for a grovel board and a sunny beach session. Still, when a strong low tracks through the Tyrrhenian, October and March can deliver surprisingly fun, walled-up waves.
Low Surf Season (April - September)
Summer turns the Mediterranean into a sea breeze machine. The swell directions keep coming from the SSE and S - in fact, April, May and June see some of the highest S-family percentages of the year - but the average swell height collapses to 0.4-0.7m and periods fall to 3.9-4.9s. The result is usually fat, weak and choppy surf. To make matters worse, the prevailing SSE and SE winds are fully onshore, creating a lumpy surface that is tough to ride. There will be the odd fun high tide on a WNW windswell, but for the most part, this is a season for other pursuits.
