Best Surf Season (September - November)

The autumn transition is Niijima's most reliable surf window. As the Pacific typhoon belt remains active and early extratropical lows begin to organize, the east-facing beaches see the highest annual frequency of swell from the optimal NE through SE quadrant. September and October jump to 55% and 64% of all swell arriving from E, ENE and ESE, with average wave heights around 1.6m (5ft) and wave periods of 8-9s. Offshore flow is not a given - the NE monsoon fights for dominance - but when low pressure tracks north of the island and winds clock west or southwest, the combination of long-period east groundswell and clean offshore breeze makes Niijima genuinely special for a mid-sized island setup.
