Best Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
Mada's sits on a southeast-facing reef, so the best surf arrives when southern-swell energy from the ESE/SE/SSE/S window lines up cleanly. The true sweet spots are the transition months of March through April and September through October, when the Indian Ocean monsoon is in flux. During these windows, the trade wind regime is less locked in, allowing spells of N to NW offshore flow to groom the lines while southern-hemisphere storm pulses wrap into the reef. Average wave heights hover in the 3-4.5ft (0.9-1.4m) range with periods in the 6-7s band, which translates to fun-sized, punchy, rippable waves rather than heavy barrels. That is when Mada's shows its best face.
Fair Surf Season (November - February)
The northeast monsoon takes over from November through February, bringing drier air and an increased frequency of offshore N, NNW, NW and WNW breezes. The trade flow, however, keeps the open-ocean swell directed from the E/ENE, meaning much of the energy arrives on a poor angle for the southeast-facing reef. Still, when ESE/SE swell sneaks in, the surface can be clean and lined up, especially in November and December when ideal wind frequencies climb toward 48-49 percent. Surf size remains modest at 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m) and periods rarely get exciting, so consistency rather than size defines this season.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
The southwest monsoon ramps up between May and August, and although average heights actually peak at around 4.5ft (1.4m), the wind quality at Mada's tends to drop. The dominant flow shifts into the WSW, W and SW sectors, producing more bumpy, cross/onshore texture on the SE-facing beach. The swell also shifts further SW/WSW, which is not the ideal angle for this break. Stormy, rainy conditions with daily rainfall around 4-7mm/day and weaker offshore wind windows make for a lower percentage of truly clean surfing days. This is the grind season: plenty of water moving, but you have to pick your windows carefully.
