Mikado

Inside Mikado is a tucked-away east-end gem, known for its wraparound right-handers that reel along a dead coral bottom. The wave offers clean peeling lines with the occasional spitting barrel section—but only when conditions align. Low tide can leave things a bit thin and inconsistent, so aim for mid to high tide, when the wave fattens up and delivers more shape and length. A southwest wind blows clean and offshore, setting up the face nicely, but be wary of west or northwest winds, which can chop up the lineup and spoil the ride. Swell from the south or southwest is your ticket here, with rideable waves starting around the 2-foot mark. This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers looking for consistent, fun rights in a mellow setting. The tide window is forgiving—low, mid, and high all work—but you’ll want the tide rising for the best quality. Keep an eye on the swell direction and wind, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most enjoyable right-handers on this stretch of coast.

Best Surf Season (June - September)

When the southwest monsoon reaches full strength, Mikado gets the most reliable combination of long period and offshore wind. The wave rose shows almost no east-quadrant swell during these months, but the long-period southern-hemisphere groundswell train is running, with average waves in the 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m) range and periods of 11.5-12.1 seconds. Meanwhile, WSW/W/WNW winds blow in the preferred offshore direction, and ideal wind frequencies reach 52-57 percent. The result is clean, high-performance reef surfing, with pumping days when swell energy pushes into the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) window.
