Mikado seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (June - September)
When the southwest monsoon reaches full strength, Mikado gets the most reliable combination of long period and offshore wind. The wave rose shows almost no east-quadrant swell during these months, but the long-period southern-hemisphere groundswell train is running, with average waves in the 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m) range and periods of 11.5-12.1 seconds. Meanwhile, WSW/W/WNW winds blow in the preferred offshore direction, and ideal wind frequencies reach 52-57 percent. The result is clean, high-performance reef surfing, with pumping days when swell energy pushes into the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) window.
Fair Surf Season (March - May and October - November)
The transition months are full of potential but lack consistency. March and April see longer periods and improving offshore winds, yet the dominant swell direction shifts away from the east; May begins the southwest monsoon with real size but only moderate ideal wind. October and November are the reverse: offshore winds remain frequent, but average periods dip below 10 seconds and the swell direction becomes a messy mix of S/SW with only a faint return of E/SE energy. These months reward flexible surfers who can pick the windows.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The northeast monsoon brings the most favorable swell directions of the year - ENE/E/ESE/SE swells are abundant - but it also delivers the worst wind statistics and shortest periods. In January and February, ideal wind sits at only 17-22 percent, and periods drop to 8-9 seconds. The prevailing NNE-NE-ENE flow chops up east swell before it can organize on the reef. Mikado can still produce good days when a westerly land breeze aligns with an east groundswell, but quality windows are rare in these three months.
