Best Surf Season (October - March)

The foundation of La Bocana's surf year rests on the combination of southern-hemisphere groundswell and winter wind patterns. From October through March, the North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens and cold fronts push into the region, bringing more N, NNW, NW and NNE offshore flow to this south-facing beach. At the same time, the S/SSW/S swell window remains active, delivering surf with an average height of 4.6-5.2ft (1.4-1.6m) and periods in the 11-13s range-powerful enough to hold shape on the sand and forgiving enough for all skill levels. November and December stand out with ideal wind conditions 61% and 58% of the time respectively, and October's strong south swells plus 55% clean wind create an excellent ramp-in. With warm water (26-29°C), low rainfall and mild air temperatures, the winter half of the year is La Bocana's most user-friendly surf season.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transition months with plenty of size but inconsistent surface conditions. April brings the first true SSW dominance of the year-over 60% of the energy comes from the SSW-with long 13.8s periods and heights averaging 5ft (1.5m). However, ideal winds are only 38% of the time, so the quality depends on picking the early-morning clean windows. September mirrors that in the autumn: it is the biggest average month of the year (5.6ft/1.7m) and loaded with hurricane-boosted southern swell, but heavy rain and WSW/W winds keep the percentage of perfect surf windows at 43%. For the experienced surfer who can read the forecast, these months can offer the best of both worlds; for the casual surfer, they are less straightforward.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

It sounds odd to call a stretch with 5.2ft (1.6m) average swells and 13-14s periods a low season, but at La Bocana the summer months are all about the relationship between swell and wind. May through August brings the strongest and most persistent SSW/S groundswells of the year-the peak of the Southern Hemisphere storm track in the Pacific-yet the wet season and afternoon sea breeze turn many sessions bumpy. Ideal wind frequencies drop to 38-50%, and rainfall reaches 1.5-7.2mm/day, with water temperature climbing to a bathtub-like 30.7°C. The waves are definitely there, but the 'low' part refers to the lack of clean, groomed surf windows compared to October-March. Dawn patrol sessions before the thermal onshore flow kicks in are your best chance to find La Bocana's summer gems.
