Best Surf Season (October - March)

The most consistent quality at Los Frailes comes when the northern Pacific storm track strengthens and high pressure settles over the southwestern United States, funneling offshore winds out of the N/WNW/NW/NNW quadrant down the Baja Peninsula. October through March brings the best combination of clean surface conditions and usable ESE/SE/SSE/S groundswell. The surf is not huge during this stretch - average heights hover around 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) - but with a large share of clean, offshore-flow days, wave quality far outshines its size. Water temperatures are still pleasant, so no thick rubber is needed.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)

The shoulder months offer a trade-off between size and surface texture. April and May see some of the longest-period south swells of the year, with average periods reaching 13.8s and an explosion of S/SSE direction. However, the ideal-wind window becomes less reliable as the interior warms, producing the classic morning-glass-then-afternoon-sea-breeze pattern. September is the third fair month because it is the peak of the tropical cyclone season and carries the highest average swell height of the year, but rain and onshore winds often accompany that reward.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the tricky stretch for Los Frailes. The swell window is almost perfectly from the S/SSE, but the atmosphere refuses to cooperate. Ideal wind time drops below 30 percent as ESE/SE/SSE/S onshore flow becomes the daily default. The result is mostly small, wind-chopped, lumpy surf. Tropical storms and hurricanes can interrupt the pattern, but those are special events rather than the daily reality. If you want clean, rippable waves, dawn patrol is the best bet, or wait for a tropical disturbance to line up favorably offshore.
