Nuevo Vallarta seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
Nuevo Vallarta's most reliable quality window comes when the North Pacific winter storm track wakes up and the dry season takes hold. Average swell heights fluctuate around a modest 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m), but the 13-14s periods and frequent offshore wind from the ENE/E quadrant make the most of that energy. High pressure over the Mexican Plateau creates clean land breezes in the morning, while passing frontal systems send WNW/W pulse sets into Banderas Bay. It is not a big-wave destination, but when a W or WSW line stands up on the sandbars, the bay offers long, rippable walls.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
Shoulder months are transitional. March and April see some of the most direct W/WSW swell of the year, with average heights still around 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m) and periods of 13.5-13.9s, but afternoon thermal winds become more persistent. September and October pick up tropical energy and the first reinforcing winter pulses; the swell direction is excellent, though the wildcard is rain, tropical storms, and inconsistent wind. These months reward dawn patrols and a careful eye on the local surf forecast.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From late spring through summer, Nuevo Vallarta slips into a smaller, more inconsistent pattern. Southern Hemisphere and tropical swells still arrive from favorable SSW/SW directions, but wave heights frequently sit at 2-3ft (0.5-1m) and the wet season brings higher precipitation, warmer 29-31°C water, and more onshore/cross-shore wind. June is the hardest month for surfers, with ideal offshore winds at only 32 percent. July and August regain clean morning windows but still lack the size and power that make the winter half of the year special. For foamies and longboards, however, the warm summer water offers easy-going waves.
