Best Surf Season (May - September)

The eastern Pacific shifts into overdrive as the South Pacific winter storm track becomes the primary swell engine for Puerto Escondido. From May through September, average swell heights climb into the 5-5.5ft (1.5-1.7m) range with periods consistently in the 13-14 second band. That combination spells long-period, powerful groundswell for the west-southwest-facing beach, and the data shows a dramatic concentration of energy from the SSW and S windows. Add in the increasingly reliable morning offshore flow from the E/ENE/NE quadrants, and you have the recipe for Puerto firing. June through August stand out as the absolute peak: ideal wind percentages reach 42-44 percent, water temps peak near 30.5°C, and the line-up is as consistent as it gets.

Fair Surf Season (April and October)

April and October are transition months. They still receive excellent long-period SSW/SW swell, with April averaging 5ft (1.5m) at 14.1 seconds and October averaging 5ft (1.5m) at 13.3 seconds. However, the quality is much more variable. April often falls victim to persistent W and WNW onshore flow, dropping the ideal wind score to just 10 percent. October, on the other hand, maintains decent offshore windows and cleaner conditions, though the peak southern-hemisphere energy begins to ease into autumn.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

The late autumn and winter months bring a distinct drop in size. Average swell heights slip to between 3.5 and 4.5ft (1.1-1.4m), and while the period remains surprisingly long for the region, the lower wave heights mean the beach is less likely to reach that heavy, world-class threshold. The saving grace is the wind regime: Tehuantepec gap winds and continental high pressure often produce offshore N/NNE flow, especially in November, January and December, with ideal wind scores between 24 and 39 percent. It is not flat, but it is a far cry from the pumping consistency of summer.
