January: A Clean, Westerly-Spiced Lull

January at Puerto Madero serves up an average swell height of around 3.5ft (1.1m) with a long-period average of 11.7s and offshore wind classified as ideal 53% of the time. The direction panel is more mixed than the summer months: SSW accounts for 28.9% and SW for 24.2%, but W and WNW combine for about 30% of the incoming energy, and that west in the water can gum up the lines at this SW-facing beach. The best surf comes from the SSW/SW pulses, mostly in the 2-5ft (0.6-1.5m) range, with the occasional 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) set from the westerly quadrant. The wind is generally light, and the clearest conditions arrive in the early morning before WSW/W flow picks up. Air temperatures average 27.2°C with a range of 24-31.4°C, water temperature sits at 28.2°C, and rainfall is barely measurable at 0.24 mm/day, making January a dry, pleasant month for a longboard and a chest-high wave.
