Optimal conditions arrive with a Northeast swell direction, with the spot waking up on waves starting around 2 feet (0.6 meters). Depending on the swell’s angle, you’ll find left-breaking waves that can pick up decent lines from the North or Southeast. The sand bottom ensures a soft, forgiving landing, making it a go-to for beginners honing their craft. Tides are forgiving, with surfable waves at low, mid, and high stages, while a Northwest wind is your best bet for cleaner, glassier faces. Heading to Punta Arenas means embracing the lulls—long stretches of flat water between infrequent swell windows. It’s an ideal playground for novice surfers to build confidence, but more experienced riders may find themselves patiently waiting for a pulse of energy to truly enjoy the lineup. Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Pacific winter machine starts to spin up in November and the coast sees a serious increase in the frequency of clean offshore wind. Punta Arena's east-northeast exposure gets the most out of the NNW and NW groundswell that rolls through this period, especially when the swell angle straightens out toward the preferred NE, ENE, E and ESE directions. Average wave heights remain modest, generally 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m), but the combination of 10-13s periods and 41-50% ideal wind windows means the surface stays glassier and more organized than at any other time of year.
