Best Surf Season (October - March)
Dracula's is a west-southwest-facing Moroccan reef/point setup that comes alive when the North Atlantic hands over long-period energy and the land breeze blows offshore. The best window runs from October through March, when passing mid-latitude lows and a suppressed Azores High drive a steady supply of 2m-plus (6-8ft) swells. Average periods sit in the 11.6-13.3s range, giving the swell enough time to wrap into the bay and stand up on the reef. At the same time, offshore flow from the NE through ESE quadrant is most reliable, with ideal wind frequency reaching 49-60 percent. A negative or neutral NAO phase can make these months especially good, as the storm track dives closer to the Moroccan coast.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
As the Azores High builds in spring, the storm track shifts away and the average wave period drops. April and May still offer decent background swell - mostly NW/NNW - but quality turns fickler as northwesterly trade winds become more dominant and true offshore windows shrink to 32-37 percent. September is a bridge back to winter: the Atlantic is still waking up, and while the average height is lower, early long-period pulses plus lighter winds can deliver surprisingly clean sessions. For surfers who want sun, mellow crowds and the occasional shoulder-high wave, these transitional months are worth a look.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet period at Dracula's. The Azores High sits in full force, the North Atlantic storm tracks into high latitudes, and nearly all the energy arrives as short-period NNW windswell. Average heights fall to 1.5-1.6m (5ft), average periods bottom out at 7.8-8.4s, and the local pressure gradient drives persistent N/NNW winds. There are still surfable mornings, especially with the NE/ENE land breeze, but the wave quality is a far cry from the stacked winter groundswells. If you are chasing Dracula's at its best, point your trip toward the long, glassy windows between October and March.
