Bogan River seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (March - May)

Autumn is the golden window at Bogan River. As the Southern Ocean storm track intensifies, average wave heights climb to a solid 5-6ft (1.6-1.9m) and periods sit in the powerful 12.8-13.0s range. Crucially, the wind ratio still favours the surfer: offshore NE, ENE, E and ESE flow blows 25-28% of the time, and the SW, WSW, W and WNW swell window accounts for 75-85% of all wave energy. You get genuine long-period groundswell and workable conditions in equal measure.

Fair Surf Season (December - February and June - August)

Summer and winter offer two very different flavours. From December to February the ocean is smaller, averaging 1.4-1.5m (4-5ft) with warm water around 19-21°C, and the improved offshore wind frequency can produce clean, rippable waves. June through August is the opposite: average heights reach 1.9m (6ft) and periods hit 12.7-13.0s, but onshore SW-WNW winds become more frequent and the ideal offshore quadrant drops to 20-22%. The surf is far heavier in winter, yet those mid-winter E/NE offshore windows are harder to find.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

Spring is the quality bottleneck at Bogan River. The storm track and resulting SW-WNW swell remain fully engaged, but the wind pattern turns against the coast: onshore SW, WSW, W and WNW flow is present 46-49% of the time, while the ideal offshore quadrant drops to just 15-18%-its lowest of the year. Expect plenty of blown-out, stormy and choppy days. However, when a slow-moving high pressure system wedges NE to ESE flow underneath an otherwise westerly regime, the same 5-7ft (1.5-2m) groundswell can still turn the river mouth into something truly special.
