Popoyo sits at the southern edge of Playa Guasacate, a sandy portal to one of Nicaragua’s most reliable wave factories. Close enough to Managua for a quick escape, it draws a mixed crowd—backpackers rubbing shoulders with suits in upscale digs, all chasing the same consistent swell. The lineup can get thick, but the wave quality often makes the squeeze worthwhile. The break unfurls as a pair of playful lefts and rights, built to handle Southwest groundswells from 5 to 10 feet, with South pulses also showing up unannounced. The bottom is a patchwork of uneven reef and sand, and the waves respond across all tides, though mid-tide is the sweet spot for peak shape. When Northeast offshores groom the face, you’ll find plenty of speed for carving and aerial tweaks. But beware—once the swell pushes past chest-high, the sets start to close out, demanding sharp reflexes and a quick drop. Getting there is straightforward: park at the south end of town and hoof it across the river mouth. The takeoff zone sits well offshore, so be prepared to paddle. Long, drawn-out rides reward the effort, and when the crowd thins, you might even find a corner to yourself. For those craving more intensity, the Outer Reef lies a stroke farther out, a steep, expert-only arena that lights up under the same Southwest pulse.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (May - October)

Popoyo sits exposed to the southwest, so the magic happens when eastern Pacific storms and southern-hemisphere low pressure systems send S/SSW/SW/WSW groundswell into the coast. From May through October, the swell window is alive with long-period energy in the 12-14s range, and the dominant directions align beautifully with this SSW-facing beach. The northeast trade winds remain important, but they are lighter and more variable during this stretch, especially in September and October when ideal offshore conditions reach nearly 40 percent. This is the prime window for consistent, rippable surf at Popoyo, with warm water, tropical showers, and regular pulses of head-high to overhead swell.
