Punta Miramar

Tucked just south of the power plant at Puerto Sandino, Punta Miramar offers a versatile surf menu spanning pointbreaks, reefbreaks, jetty breaks, and beachbreaks. Easy access via paved roads straight to the coast makes it a convenient hub for locals and travelers alike, while the surrounding environment typically stays clean and inviting. The main draw is Miramar Point—a left-hand point break that peels over uneven reef. It handles south to southwest swells in the 4-to-10-foot range, with three distinct takeoff spots that become especially defined during bigger swells. When conditions align, the outside section delivers fast, heavy, hollow rides that demand respect. Mid to high tides are optimal for shape and flow, though too much water can trigger backwash. Northeast winds keep things clean and lined up. Beyond Miramar Point, the area serves up variety for different skill levels. Pipes offers fun, rippable rights and a fast left over shallow reef. Shacks is a quicker, more hollow wave that tests technique and timing. Crowds tend to be mellow, with most surfers just passing through. Prime season runs from April through September, when solid southern hemisphere pulses roll in all summer long. Intermediate and above recommended for Miramar Point’s speed and rocky bottom.

Best Surf Season (April - October)

Punta Miramar is a west-southwest-facing beach, so the surf clock really starts ticking when the swell switches into the SSW/SW quadrant and the trade wind blows from the northeast. From April through October, the average swell height holds at 1.2-1.3m (4ft) and the average period climbs into the 13-14 second range. The wave rose becomes overwhelmingly dominated by SSW/SW energy, with the ideal direction share reaching 65-94% of the total. This is the Southern Hemisphere swell season: powerful low-pressure systems in the South Pacific send long-period SSW groundswell thousands of miles into the Central American Pacific, while occasional Eastern Pacific tropical cyclones add extra punch in September and October. Offshore NE/ENE trade winds remain the climatic norm, and ideal wind frequency peaks at 67-74% during June-August. Expect warm water around 28-29°C, building rainfall from May onward, and the most consistent, rippable surf of the year.
