Skallelv's best windows come when the Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea low-pressure tracks are fully engaged. From October through March, average swell heights climb to around 3ft (0.9m) and periods sit in the 6.3-7.2s range, which is exactly the rideable windswell window for this SE-facing beach. The numbers look modest, but the combination of frequent lows and a 20-24% offshore wind frequency gives the sandbars real shape. A positive NAO tends to steer storm systems toward northern Europe and can add extra punch to these winter months. Cold is the trade-off: air temperatures hover around -6 to -4°C and water temps bottom out near 3°C. You are surfing in the Arctic, but this is when Skallelv has the most juice.
