That convenience comes with a price, though—expect a lively crowd in the water, including surf schools churning out students, so bring your patience and awareness. The wave breaks over an uneven, sharp reef, so reef boots are highly recommended for safe footwork. It’s a go-to for locals and visitors alike, offering reliable surf when conditions line up. When the swell pushes in around 2 feet (0.6 m), Paunch can fire up nicely. Northeast swells are the ticket, though northwest and east swells also get the job done. The lefts are the main draw, starting with a punchy, tubular section before opening into a more manageable wall, with an extra cover-up waiting inside for those who charge. When the swell cranks up, the wave gets sucky and demanding. Rights off the peak exist, but they lack the reward of their left-hand counterpart. Tide-wise, low to mid or high works best, while a west wind keeps things clean. This spot is tailored for intermediate surfers ready to navigate a peaky reef wave. Best Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of the surf year at Paunch arrives when the North Atlantic high pressure system locks in and drives consistent NE trade-wind swell across the Caribbean. Paunch's east-facing layout loves swell that lines up from the east-northeast through southeast window (ONO/O/OSO/SO), and while the dominant NE swell sits just outside that ideal angle, it still pushes plenty of clean, rippable energy into the break. Average wave heights climb to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods around 8-8.4s, while offshore WNW/NW winds blow 94-97% of the time. This is the most reliable, cleanest and most consistent stretch of the year.
